Since 2023, I (Christiane) have been serving on the board of the Friends of the Breitenberg Flax and Weaving Museum. It is a beautiful little open-air museum in the Bavarian Forest, very close to the Austrian border, which has been lying dormant for several years now. That’s why our museum still feels a bit like it’s from another era – old buildings, lots of wood, traces of the work that has taken place here over generations. To appeal to a new generation of history enthusiasts, there will be a major exhibition next year on the theme of „Flax and Women“.
However, there is still a lot to be done before we get there – and we are starting right now to prepare the museum for this, step by step.
What often goes unseen from the outside: before an exhibition comes to fruition, there is clearing out, sorting, carrying, cleaning, discarding and rethinking. That is exactly what is happening here right now – and we have decided not to keep this phase behind closed doors, but to open it up.
A look behind the scenes
Our action weekend is an invitation and a request for you to simply come along and get involved. You can see for yourself how spaces are transformed, how a whole picture gradually emerges from lots of small tasks – and how a museum goes about preparing for an exhibition in practical terms.
At the same time, it’s a great opportunity for us to show you in person what we’re working on, how the exhibition is conceived, and what we have in mind for the coming year.

You can camp in a campervan or tent right across the road. The sports club has kindly made toilets and water available to us.
Catering
Lunch snacks and drinks will be provided.
Please make your own breakfast.
We're having a barbecue together on Saturday evening – just bring whatever you fancy.
What we're planning to do
- Clearing out a grain bin
- Dispose of old hay and clear out rooms
- Removing a rotten stable floor
- Sweeping and cleaning in the houses
We’ll just see what everyone fancies and split the tasks up accordingly.
