Together on the trail of flax

Network meeting of the German partner museums of "1 square metre of canvas"

Our network meeting of participating museums in Germany impressively demonstrated just how much enthusiasm, exchange and energy can be contained in one square metre of flax. Across three stations, it became clear that the project thrives on participation, sharing - and passion.

Kick-off in Wegberg-Beeck
It started in the Flax Museum Beeck in a restored tithe barn. Here, visitors can experience at first hand how flax is turned into linen - with original equipment, hands-on activities and many interactive stations. Especially for children, the "Flax diploma" A highlight: anyone who tries their hand at breaking, hackling or spinning can proudly take home a certificate. The museum garden with its flax field and dyer's plants also brought history to life. The discussions centred on ideas for education, event formats and regional specialities in flax cultivation.

On to the Eifel - Rupperath Handweaving Museum
The next stop was the Rupperath Handweaving Museum. This small, fine collection is all about spinning, weaving and textile cultures worldwide. Almost all of the equipment was available to work with, making the meeting a lively workshop format. Structural issues - such as the realisation of the project in small museums - were also discussed.

Closing in Konz - Roscheider Hof
Finally, the route led to the Roscheider Hof open-air museum near Trier. Flax could be seen live in action at the local craft market - from drying to spinning. Between themed gardens, exhibitions and historic buildings, there was a lively exchange about mediation, sustainability and new co-operations.

Many threads - one network
This meeting showed how unifying working with flax can be - between spinning wheel, loom and people with common goals. A big thank you to all the museums and contributors involved. We look forward to new ideas, further projects - and the next reunion in the network 1 square metre of linen.
